Place of Pascal and Diane Vinel
Mieke Smet creates understated sculptures of textiles, metal mesh and paper in her studio in Antwerp. She often works with materials that already have a story and searches in her work for the next episode in that story. She depicts the fragility of every living organism and the inevitable decay that passing time brings. She does this by manipulating the material to her will into a kind of permanent and controlled scarring. She is the astonished witness of how a surface comes to life through minute and hour-long actions. This is her way of giving structure to the world and her thoughts - both often chaotic - through the power of repetition.
